Chapter 21 - Benefit Of The Doubt

Luke stood in the middle of the makeshift prison cell, and he spent some time contemplating how much time he had spent in places like this.

“I swear I get locked up somewhere at least once a month,” he muttered. It was an exaggeration, obviously, but it didn’t feel like it.

The cell was basically just a small room, so there weren’t metal bars or steel doors. It was a normal door that had been reinforced to prevent anyone from kicking it down, and a small opening was positioned at shoulder-height.

Every few hours, he heard a loud, distorted voice that seemed to come from everywhere across the camp. It took a few seconds for him to figure out what he was hearing. It was a speaker system. He hadn’t heard anyone using an intercom or speakers for anything in over a year, and the sound was so foreign to his ears that he couldn’t place it at first.

A lot of random things passed through his head as he paced the cell. Primary among them was the thing that had been floating in the back of his head ever since he first heard about it. Someone was Caelan’s second-in-command for his secret activities - harassing the soldiers for supplies, threatening them to keep them in line, and whatever else he was keeping from Luke. But who was it?

He kept coming back to Damien. It had to be him. He was definitely involved - Luke had seen the guilt on his face when the soldiers told them about it - but he didn’t know for sure if he was at the top of the food chain. Was there someone else? Luke doubted it. Damien made sense.

Luke reminded himself not to jump to conclusions. He needed proof, first, and he wasn’t going to get it while he was still in this cell. And besides, Caelan was still in charge of the factory, so any second-in-command was irrelevant until Luke did something about him.

Luke lost track of time as he waited for someone to come and talk to him. His only interaction was when Emilio came to see him, and they had a very awkward conversation - Emilio believed that Luke was a good person, but he couldn’t ignore the things that Trent had told them, and besides, Emilio wasn’t in charge, so he didn’t make the calls.

In other words, he came to say that he was sorry about Luke being thrown into a prison cell, but he wasn’t going to do anything about it.

Very helpful.

“You can tell your side of the story to Calvert,” Emilio told him. “He’s in charge, and he’ll want to talk to you himself before he makes any decisions. Don’t worry, you’ll be treated fairly, and Calvert will listen to what you have to say.”

Luke could hear the undertone in Emilio’s voice. “He’ll listen, but you don’t think I have much chance of convincing him.”

Emilio hesitated, glancing over his shoulder at the guards outside before replying.
